Koh Samui Weather: Quick and Comprehensive Seasonal Guide

Date of publication: 03 Nov 2023 | Updated: 07 Feb 2024

The temperature on Samui stays fairly consistent year-round, typically ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius. So, if you're looking for warm weather, any time of year is a good time to visit. However, it's important to be aware of certain specifics that could impact your trip.

Firstly, the weather on Samui, as well as on Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, differs from that in Phuket due to different monsoonal patterns. Koh Samui is situated in the Gulf of Thailand, which is part of the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, while Phuket is located in the Indian Ocean, influencing the monsoon patterns there.

Important: The rainy season in Koh Samui and Phuket occurs at different times!

Rainy Season (Oct – Dec)

The rainy season is confined to October, November, and December. During these months, rainfall is more frequent and heavier. However, this does not preclude the appearance of the sun. Given that Samui is an island, the weather can be quite variable and unpredictable. The rainy season can still offer a substantial number of sunny days.

Dry Season (Jan – Sep)

Are the other months in Samui considered the dry season? Yes, while occasional rainfall and storms can occur, this period is statistically the driest. Those concerned solely with temperature and rainfall can visit from January to September without much worry.

Koh Samui is a very international destination, and during the dry season, you can experience several major events, including:

  • Christmas & New Year's Eve on December 25th and December 31st
  • Chinese New Year, which falls between January 21st and February 20th, depending on the lunar calendar
  • Thai New Year (Songkran) on April 14th

Be Aware: High Season and Windy Season (Jan – Mar)

Two key points to note are that January to March is the high season, marked by the most tourist activity, and February and March experience strong winds leading to heavy waves.

If you palnned the photo shoot and it looks like will be rain... here is important to read:

Recommended Visit Time

My recommendation for the best time to visit is from April to September. During these months, the weather is stable and dry, winds are minimal, and tourist traffic is lower.
