Engagement Photoshoot in Lisbon: Where to Go, When, and What It Costs

If you want the short answer: for an engagement shoot in Lisbon I would start with Alfama at sunrise, the cliffs above Praia da Ursa, or the gardens at Monserrate. Three completely different moods, and all three work.

I have photographed couples for 19 years, more than ten of them abroad, and now in Lisbon. Most of the couples who write to me are not local – they have just got engaged somewhere else, or are about to, and they want photographs while they are here. This guide is what I actually tell them: where to go, what time, what it costs, and what to expect. What an engagement shoot actually is here

It is a walk with a camera. An hour and a half, usually, somewhere you would have wanted to see anyway. Nobody is watching, there is no ceremony to keep to, and the only thing that has to happen is that the two of you are together in a place worth remembering.

That matters because most people book this having never been photographed as a couple before. You do not need to know how to pose. My job is to put you somewhere the light is good, give you something small to do, and then stay out of the way while you do it.

Three kinds of couple book these sessions, and they need slightly different things:

• Just engaged, on the trip. Often the proposal happened days earlier, sometimes here. The session is the celebration. These are the easiest – the mood does the work.
• Planning a wedding elsewhere. Photos for the invitations, the website, the slideshow. Here the brief is practical: horizontal frames, room for text, a mix of close and wide.

Where to shoot an engagement session in Lisbon

Lisbon is small and vertical, which is good news: you can cover two very different backdrops in one session without spending the session in a car. What follows is not a list of the prettiest places in the city. It is a list of places that photograph well with two people in them, which is a narrower thing.

Alfama and Graça – the Lisbon everyone pictures

Tiled facades, washing lines, stairs, and the tram. At seven in the morning it is empty and the light comes down the streets sideways. At eleven it is a queue. If you only do one location and you want the photographs to say Lisbon without a caption, this is it.

Practical notes: the streets are steep and cobbled, so flat shoes for the walking and heels in a bag if you want them for a few frames. The miradouros above Alfama – Portas do Sol, Senhora do Monte – give you the rooftop view, and they are five minutes apart.

Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real – colour and doorways

Quieter in the morning than its nightlife reputation suggests. Painted doors, small squares, jacaranda trees in May and June. This is the area for couples who want the photographs to feel like a city walk rather than a landmark tour.

Belém – monuments in frame

If you want architecture that reads instantly as Portugal, Belém has it. The trade-off is space and people: it is flat, open and busy, so it works best early or in the last hour of light, and it works better as a second location than a whole session.

Sintra – gardens and palaces

Half an hour out of the city and a completely different world: mist, moss, ferns, and buildings that look invented. Monserrate is the one I return to. Sintra rewards couples who want atmosphere over recognisability, and it is worth a whole session rather than a stop.

Be realistic about time. Sintra is not a quick detour – allow the travel, and allow for the weather being different from the city, which it usually is.

The Atlantic coast – Guincho, Ursa, Cabo da Roca

Forty minutes west and the country runs out. Cliffs, wind, enormous light. Praia da Ursa in particular is wild and usually quiet, and the walk down is real walking – worth it, but not in the wrong shoes.

This is where I would go for the photographs you enlarge and put on a wall. It is also where the wind will do whatever it wants to your hair, and the pictures are usually better for it.

Engagement photography beyond Lisbon: the Algarve and southern Portugal

A fair number of couples ask about the south – the Algarve cliffs at Benagil and Ponta da Piedade, the beaches near Lagos, sometimes Comporta on the way down. It is a genuinely different landscape: golden sandstone, sea caves, and light that stays warm much later into the evening than it does in the city.

I travel for these. In practice it means the session is planned around your route rather than around my calendar: you tell me where you will be and on which days, and we fit the shoot into the trip. Travel beyond the Lisbon area is quoted separately and honestly – it is time, not a surcharge for the scenery.

One piece of advice, though. If your trip includes both Lisbon and the south and you only want one session, do it in the place you will talk about afterwards. The photographs are a souvenir of a specific few days, and it is worth them matching the part you will remember.

When to shoot: light, season, and crowds

The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. That is not photographer folklore, it is the difference between soft light on your faces and hard shadows under your eyes. Between those two windows the city is bright, contrasty and full of people.

Sunrise is the one people resist and then thank me for. Alfama at seven in the morning is genuinely empty; the same street at noon has forty people in it, all of whom are in your photographs.

• Spring (March–May). Jacarandas in late May, comfortable temperatures, changeable weather.
• Summer (June–August). Long evenings and reliable sun, but the middle of the day is unusable and the city is at its busiest. Sunrise sessions are at their best here.
• Autumn (September–October). My favourite. Warm light, fewer people, the sea still swimmable.
• Winter (November–February). Quiet, dramatic skies, and the sun sits low all day – which means a usable window that lasts hours rather than one. Rain is the risk, and we plan a fallback.

What an engagement photoshoot in Lisbon costs

A standard session covers about an hour and a half in one or two nearby locations, with the edited gallery delivered online. Sessions that involve Sintra or the coast take longer because the travel is real, and sessions in the south of Portugal are quoted with the travel included so there are no surprises.

What I would ask you to compare, when you are looking at photographers, is not the headline number. It is what comes after it: how many edited photographs you receive, whether there is a charge per image afterwards, how long delivery takes, and whether travel outside the city is included or added later. Those four answers explain most of the price differences you will see.

Planning a session around a trip

Most engagement sessions I photograph are booked by people who will be in Portugal for four to seven days. The planning is simpler than it looks:

1. Tell me your dates first, not your dream location. Which mornings you are free decides more than anything else on the list.
2. Pick one area, not five. A session that walks one neighbourhood properly beats a session that drives between landmarks and rushes all of them.
3. Book the light, then the day. If sunrise is impossible for you, say so early and we plan around shade instead of pretending the midday sun is fine.
4. Leave the outfits simple. Colours that sit together, comfortable shoes for the walking, and something you would actually wear. Lisbon is not a studio and it is better when it does not look like one.
5. Have a rain plan. We agree it in advance. It is almost always "move it a day", and in a week-long trip that costs nothing.

What you get afterwards

An online gallery at full resolution, ready to download and share, with no watermarks and no per-photograph charges. The editing is quiet: colour and light corrected, skin left alone, the city looking like the city rather than like a filter.

Delivery is normally within a week. If you need a few frames sooner – for the people at home who have been waiting for the news – say so and you will have them the next day.

Common questions

We have never been photographed together. Is that a problem? No, and it is the normal case rather than the exception. Almost nobody who books this is a model. The session is built around walking and talking for exactly this reason.

Can we do the proposal and the engagement photos in one session? Yes, and it is common – the proposal happens in the first few minutes and the rest of the session is the celebration. The planning for the secret part is different, and it is covered in the Lisbon proposal locations guide.

How far in advance should we book? For a specific sunrise on a specific day in summer, a few weeks. Outside the busy months, a few days is often enough. It costs nothing to ask.

Do you shoot outside Lisbon? Yes – Sintra and the coast constantly, the Algarve and the rest of southern Portugal on request, and elsewhere in Europe for couples who are travelling.
