Family & children photography Family Photoshoot from Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara to Bica, Lisbon June 17th, 2026
This family photoshoot began at Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, one of the best viewpoints over central Lisbon. From here, you can see the city spread out below, with São Jorge Castle standing above the rooftops on the opposite hill.
It is a great place to start a family photoshoot, especially with children. The walk goes downhill from the viewpoint, so there is no pressure to rush or climb steep streets.
We could take our time, explore different corners of Bairro Alto, and let the photoshoot feel more like a family walk through Lisbon than a formal session.
This day was particularly special because it was Grandpa’s birthday. His two granddaughters gave him plenty of attention, hugs, laughs, and little moments together.
Those are often the photographs that become the most meaningful later: not only everyone looking at the camera, but the way they naturally interact with each other.
With family photos, especially when children are involved, the most important thing is building a connection with them first. Children do not need to stand still and pose for a long time.
They need space to be curious, playful, and sometimes a little silly. We let them make faces, move around, laugh, and invent their own games. Then, at the right moments, I gave small directions and caught the real expressions in between.
As we walked down through Bairro Alto, the afternoon light created beautiful flashes of sun between the buildings. We found colourful doors, textured walls, narrow streets, and small corners that worked perfectly for relaxed family photos. Lisbon gives you so much character without needing a complicated setup.
Further down the hill, we reached the Bica funicular, one of the city’s most recognisable scenes. The yellow tram, steep street, old façades, and view towards the river brought a very Lisbon feeling to the final part of the session.
By the end, we had more than a set of family portraits. We had a birthday memory for Grandpa, two happy granddaughters, and a relaxed walk through some of Lisbon’s most beautiful streets.
That's it, the photos are over... The End :)
